The 2017-2018 season will be the first in which the Walmart and Amazon brands are merging, with the retailer launching a king bed in the fall and Amazon launching a Tundra bed in 2020.
“The new king beds will make shopping smarter and more convenient, and will make life easier for shoppers,” Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said in a statement.
“These king beds are designed to take advantage of all the advantages of an open-concept home.
They offer easy access, spacious storage, and more comfort than any other king bed, including more space for kids.”
Walmart and Amazon have been testing the new beds in-store, testing a new set of king bed-like structures for the first time, according to a Walmart spokeswoman.
The company is also working with the manufacturer to develop a king frame for the new bed that will be able to be easily moved to other rooms.
The company also plans to open stores with the new king bed designs for consumers to purchase, the spokesperson said.
Walmart is also adding a slew of new king furniture, including a king chair, a king table, a queen bed, a baby crib and a queen sofa.
The retailer is also launching a new, “family-friendly” aisle, which will be used for baby strollers, playtime and other needs, the Walmart spokeswoman said.
The new King beds will also offer shoppers an alternative to a king couch, which can be a hassle for parents and kids because of its size.
The new King bed offers a larger and taller bed that sits just below the headboard, while a king sofa can be folded down to make a larger space, the spokeswoman said in an emailed statement.
Walmart is also partnering with the retail giant to bring back its old King bed design, a design that Walmart developed in the 1970s, but it did not make it into the new design that Amazon is introducing.
