New Zealand’s first-ever “truckbed” sofa bed will soon be installed in a Wellington suburb, making it the first in the country to offer an entirely new way to live and work.
Air bed was developed by Wellington’s Wairarapa City Council, which was seeking ways to provide a more comfortable and cost-effective alternative to traditional wooden and cardboard bed frames.
The “turbulent” design is the result of a three-year, $US2 million trial, the council said.
The $10,000, 6,000sqm trailer bed was made from “sturdy materials” and incorporates “anodised aluminium, fibre reinforced plastics and a carbon fibre core” with “multiple layers of foam”, according to the council.
“We are very excited to be launching the first trailer bed in Wellington, where we have seen a massive increase in demand for new and innovative solutions to address the housing crisis,” the council’s chief executive, Chris Smith, said.
“This is a truly remarkable moment for Wellington and a testament to the city’s innovative approach to housing.
We believe the trailer bed is a great first step in building an innovative new urban infrastructure.”
Wairarapas first trailer trailer bed will be installed at the Wairapas High Park site on Tuesday.
RTE’s The Rural Tonight reported on Wednesday that a second trailer bed would be installed within a week, with the council hoping to have a fully functional trailer bed installed by the end of March.
“It’s a good sign that Wellington has made an important decision to tackle the housing shortage and we believe the public is hungry for better accommodation,” Mr Smith said.
Airbeds were popular in the 1970s and 1980s as a means of getting people into the outdoors without having to sleep in their homes.
But they have been increasingly unpopular as technology and design advances have made them easier to transport, install and move.
The trailer bed design has been a popular choice in the developed world for home use, with more than 20,000 trailers installed globally between 1995 and 2013, according to data from the UN.
“For decades we’ve seen a surge in demand to use trailers for home accommodation and we think this trend is only going to accelerate,” Mr Jones said.
“We’re very excited by the fact that this trailer bed concept is the first to offer a fully built-in home-based trailer bed for Wellington.”
Aerial trailer bed pioneer Aamir Ahmed, who is a founding partner of AirBed Wellington, said the concept was a way of building a new kind of trailer bed.
“The trailer design is not new, it’s evolved a lot over the years, it has been around for a while,” Mr Ahmed said.
“The reason we’ve got the trailer concept is because we’ve been able to build trailers that are quite light and compact, which allows for more space for our occupants.”
People have a lot of different ideas for living in a trailer, we’re not trying to make something that everyone is going to like.
“Mr Ahmed said the company would soon launch a second truck bed for Auckland, while it would be installing its first trailer in Melbourne.
AirBed Wellington is a partnership between the Wellington City Council and Wairas local council, which is funded by the Government.
AirBed is currently in the planning stage for a second site in the city.
